$100 Laptop
Professor Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the $100 laptop initiative—OLPC - One Laptop per Child—believes that his plan to distribute millions of low-cost laptops to school children in developing countries is being undermined by Intel.
According to Negroponte, Intel, which had previously dismissed the $100 laptop as a “gadget” is now selling its own cut-price laptop, called the Classmate, below cost to drive him out of markets.
Craig Barrett, Chairman of Intel said: “We’re not trying to drive him out of business. We’re trying to bring capability to young people. There are lots of opportunities for us to work together.”
However, Professor Negroponte has countered that argument by saying, “The concept has received a lot of criticism and yet after that criticism they are either copying it or doing things perfectly in line with the concept. Yes people laugh at it, then they criticize it, then they copy it.”
He also says that Intel has distributed marketing literature to governments with titles such as “the shortcomings of the One Laptop per Child approach”.
Intel Classmate
Although there are a number of differences between the hardware and software on these low priced, robust machines, Professor Negroponte’s $100 laptop uses a processor designed by AMD which is Intel’s main competitor.
Negroponte is reported as saying, “Intel and AMD fight viciously. We’re just sort of caught in the middle.
The $100 laptops will cost $176 initially, but the price will eventually be reduced to $100 to be sold to the governments of developing countries.
Meanwhile, Intel claims that it has received “thousands” of orders for the Classmate, which is currently priced at over $200.
I knew it! When I built this site using this chocolatey colored template, I just knew it was the beginning of a chocolate trend and I was right!
“Chocolate”
First, LG introduced its Black Label Series a short while ago, featuring the glossy “Chocolate” and more recently the “Chocolate Platinum” mobile phones.
“Chocolate Platinum”
Then they expanded their range of “Chocolate” branding to include Home Theaters. But it didn’t stop there, because now you can get your hands on a Chocolate Laptop.
The Chocolate laptop has a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of memory, a 120GB hard drive, Bluetooth connections and an ATI Mobility Radeon X1350 graphics card. It also comes with touch-sensitive buttons and a piano-black finish.
That’s very cool, but you see, I’m a Mac kind of a girl, so I’m wondering when Apple will be inspired to come up with a glossy chocolate Intel Mac… Now that would definitely be something worth getting my teeth into!
At the time I cast adrift my heart,
On seas of blood, we freely sail.
Twilight blessed in sweet darkness wrapped,
Sing of love’s truth in all its forms.
Obsidian eye, intake sweet breath,
To recreate the same allure…
Offer me thy sweet caress,
One kiss shall fortify this love.
Fragrant life eternal promised,
With thine accordance the covenant is sealed…
